After settling on where to shoot for sunset, we laid down our gear and hung out for bit around the high point in the park, enjoying ourselves as well as some interesting but delicious food. A few slices of yak cheese and some manna bread and I was ready to get at it, climbing around, and taking advantage of the afternoon light.

While it's still harshly bright, the light can cast dark shadows and strong overexposed highlights. Processing the scene as monochrome with a "yellow" filter and retaining detail in the highlights with layer masks, I am able to place the focus on shapes and tone values as opposed to color and hues. While I love colorful images more than anything, I felt this to be a great candidate for mono.

Thankfully the great light stuck around till before sunset and some interesting cloud patterns moved in as well. That made for a great way to end the evening. Well that, Red Stripe and sweet tea vodka.

Beautiful shades and textures. Great shot. Do you correct lens distortions? :-)

I do to whatever extent CS5's Camera Raw has on auto correction. It's able to read the lens profile and fix geometric distortion, vignette, and chromatic aberration. Usually that's only near the edge of the frame. Being at such a low vantage point those trees do look quite distorted and they may be to an extent, but in reality they are both leaning a bit.

I understand. I use CS 3, and it does not offer me fix geometric distortion, I do that in PS. :-)
