I brought my friend Mark out to Busch Wildlife the other night so we could get in some shoot time on an evening bursting with the promise of stellar light. In this conservation area are a number of munitions bunkers, most of which aren't used anymore. I've driven past them a number of times and never really had the urge to photograph them. It had been done numerous times before and was a very obvious shot to me.
On the way out of the park we had driven past a bunker and noticed a great crop of bright pink color in the sky. Somewhat slamming on the brakes, I thought we should turn around and shoot it. Before I even said anything Mark just looked at me and said, "Shoot on top of that bunker?" Without realizing it right away, Mark had the best idea on how to utilize the bunker perfectly.
So we got out and climbed through the overgrown, extremely thorny foliage to make it atop the mound for a better vantage point. Wanting even more height, Mark climbed atop a large green metal container of some sort and got a wicked shot about 20 feet behind me.
It was one of those moments where going with your gut yields some of the best results, and Mark's ever-present willingness to explore is something you can't help but gravitate towards.
